Our goal is to help children with cancer deal with the unimaginable and lead
the lives they were meant to live.
The Cancer Center for Kids in the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology
at Winthrop-University Hospital is a state-of-the-science facility where children are given the best possible chance of recovery
and cure through superior medical care, constant nurturing and unconditional support in an environment that promotes healing.
In
Nassau County, Winthrop's Cancer Center for Kids is the largest facility for treating children with cancer and blood disorders,
and the only member of the prestigious national Children's Oncology Group (COG) in the County. COG is an international consortium of collaborating hospitals recognized as leaders in the treatment
of childhood cancers. Membership in COG places Winthrop at the forefront of research, treatment and use of the latest medications.
The Center also coordinates care with patients treated at some of the major medical centers in New York, including Memorial
Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York/Presbyterian Medical Center and the Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital of New York.
This provides access to renowned bone marrow transplant unit and allows us to collaborate on numerous studies.
The
Center's skilled and compassionate pediatric oncology and hematology professionals are specially trained to diagnose and treat the entire spectrum of pediatric malignancies and blood diseases. Sharing and
pooling their extensive experience and knowledge, they not only provide young patients with comprehensive, sensitive care,
but also help their families endure very tough times -- offering support from the moment of diagnosis, through intense treatments
and long-term follow-up. Every member of the Center's Team addresses the physical and emotional needs of each child, while
listening carefully to family members' concerns and questions.
The Center's understanding and supportive "home-away-from-home"
environment -- an environment that nurtures the child and empowers the family -- almost always restores health. Most of the
Center's young patients are cared for as outpatients in the Nina Jillian Rosenblatt Ambulatory Suite -- a comfortably
appointed, child-friendly facility. When required, inpatient accommodations are available in the Jay's World Childhood
Cancer Foundation Unit located in the Hospital's modern Hagedorn Pediatric Inpatient Center. Both areas are not only equipped with the technology needed to provide the finest treatment for the children, they are also designed
to encourage parents' participation in their children's care. All contacts with patients - inpatient or outpatient, telephone
or electronic - are conducted with one of the Center's experienced attending physicians.
